1. Hardness and toughness Mohs hardness is a measure of the hardness of gemstones and minerals.

These figures are based on the relative ease with which a mineral can be scratched by other objects. But Mohs hardness can be misleading. Hardness grades are not uniformly differentiated between minerals. Diamonds, for example, are only one grade higher than corundum, but they are many times harder. Corundum (ruby and sapphire) is relatively hard, with a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale. It has good toughness and no splitting. Splitting refers to the characteristic that a gemstone breaks along a certain direction after being stressed. This makes it a great choice for rings and other everyday jewelry.

2. Stability Under normal wearing conditions, corundum is very stable, which means that it is heat-resistant, light-resistant and not affected by general chemicals.

Boric acid powder can corrode the surface of untreated gemstones. Gems that have been filled with cracks, holes, and stains can be damaged by acids, even mild ones like lemon juice.

3. Clean warm soapy water is always safe.

Ultrasonic and steam cleaning devices are commonly used to clean untreated, heat treated, and lattice diffusion treated gemstones. Materials treated with crack filling, hole filling, or staining shall be cleaned with a damp cloth.

4.Treatment and Ruggedness Considerations Untreated and equalized heat-treated sapphires are very strong.

Gems treated with lattice diffusion will have varying degrees of color penetration. In some gemstones, the treated color permeates the entire stone; in others, the color permeates only the surface. For lattice diffusion treated gemstones where the color penetrates only the surface of the gemstone, surface damage or secondary cutting removes the color. Gems that have been crack filled will have cracks that touch the surface, mainly filled with glass with high lead content. Fillers can be damaged by contact with a variety of chemicals. Even relatively mild substances, such as lemon juice, can cause changes in glass with high lead content. Sapphires using this method of filling are much less common than rubies. In some cases, however, the amount of glass filler in sapphire is quite extensive. Sapphires treated in this way require greater care than untreated, heat-treated, or lattice-diffusion treated sapphires.
